Chyna’s Story: The Strength You Don’t See
My name is Chyna McGarity. I'm a mother, a survivor of domestic violence, and a woman who has lived her life believing in faith, resilience, and the power of helping others. For more than 40 years, I've poured myself into uplifting people — as an advocate, author, transformation coach, Board Certified Christian Counselor, and plus-size model.
One thing I've learned is this: you can't judge a book by its cover. I don't look like what I'm going through. I don't look like someone whose kidneys are failing. I don't look like someone fighting for their life every single day. And that's intentional — I choose to smile, to show joy, and to keep living with purpose.
People often tell me, 'But you don't look sick.' What you see is faith. What you feel is hope. What you don't see are the long nights, the fatigue, the pain, the prayers I whisper when no one is watching.
I'm not sharing this for sympathy. I'm sharing it to offer hope — and to ask for help. I urgently need a kidney transplant. My life literally depends on it. I'm believing that God will send the right person — a hero with a heart big enough to save a life.
Whether you consider becoming a donor, share my story, pray for me, or simply pass this message along — it matters. Every act of love brings me closer to the miracle I'm praying for.

Why Living Kidney Donation Matters
Living donation is often the best path to a longer, healthier life — for both the recipient and the donor. Here's why it matters so much.
Better Outcomes
Living donor kidneys begin working immediately and typically last 15–20 years — compared to 10–12 years for deceased donor kidneys. That means more time, more life, more possibility.
The Waiting List Reality
Over 100,000 Americans are waiting for a kidney transplant. The average wait for a deceased donor kidney is 3–5 years. Tragically, 13 people die every day while waiting. Living donation changes that.
Donors Live Full Lives
Most living donors live completely normal, healthy lives with one kidney. Your remaining kidney naturally increases its function to compensate — and the medical team ensures you are fully healthy before any donation proceeds.

"Living donation is one of the most profound gifts one human being can give another. And it starts with simply saying: I want to learn more."
Could You Be a Living Donor
You may have questions — and that's completely normal. Here are honest answers to the most common ones.
Can I live normally with one kidney?
Yes. Most living donors live full, healthy lives. Your remaining kidney naturally adapts and increases its function. Donors are carefully screened to ensure they are in excellent health before any donation.
Will donating affect my long-term health?
For most healthy donors, the long-term health impact is minimal. The medical team conducts a thorough evaluation to ensure donation is safe for you specifically. Your health and wellbeing come first.
Who decides if I'm eligible?
The transplant medical team makes that determination through a thorough evaluation — including health history, blood tests, and imaging. You are never pressured. The process is entirely your choice.
What does the testing process involve?
Testing typically includes blood work, urine tests, imaging scans, and a general health assessment. All testing is free to you and conducted at the transplant center.
How long is recovery?
Most living donors return to normal activities within 2–4 weeks. The surgery is minimally invasive, and the medical team supports you every step of the way — before, during, and after.

"If you feel called to explore this, the first step is simply reaching out. No commitment required — just curiosity and compassion."
How to Begin the Donor Process
Taking the first step is easier than you think. Here's how the process works — simply and clearly.
Step 1 – Express Interest
Visit the Piedmont Transplant Institute donor screening page and complete a short online form. It takes just a few minutes and creates no obligation.
Step 2 – Initial Health Review
The transplant team will review your basic health information to see if you may be a potential candidate. This is confidential and completely free.
Step 3 – Further Evaluation
If you appear to be a potential match, the team will guide you through additional testing — blood work, imaging, and a health assessment — all at no cost to you.
Step 4 – Make Your Decision
After evaluation, you decide. There is no pressure. The medical team is there to inform and support you — the choice is always yours.

"All donor medical costs are covered. You will never be asked to pay for testing or the donation surgery."
